Basic rules in Denmark

If you bring a vehicle with foreign number plates to Denmark

Remember the following when you take a vehicle with foreign plates into Denmark:

  • The vehicle must be registered within 14 days after your arrival in Denmark
  • You must pay registration
  • You must pay annual fees as ACT or green owner tax when the car is registered in Denmark
  • You MUST have a Danish car insurance BEFORE you can register your vehicle
  • You care MUST have been checked before you can register it

It is expensive to cheat SKAT

"Gratuitous benefits: The proprietor of a business chain had a new kitchen made in his home. But he decided to have the carpenter, who did the work, write a bill on the remodelling of his stores instead. When SKAT discovered this, the proprietor himself was subjected to a bill of 165.000 kr. in tax and VAT and a fine of 130.000 kr. The carpenter received a fine of 30.000 kr."

Here is what tax write about punishment for tax cheating:

"Gross negligence violations
If you should know better, but still violate the tax and excise laws.
½ x the evaded amount up to 60.000 kr.
1 x the evaded amount over 60.000 kr."

"Intentional violations
If you intentionally violating the tax and excise law.

1 x the evaded amount up to 60.000 kr.
2 x the evaded amount over 60.000 kr."

Tax evasion can give prison if there is withheld for more than 250.000kr. The punishment is up to 1 year and 6 months and a fine of 1 x the amount defrauded of the VAT and tax. In particularly serious cases the punishment can be increased to up to 8 years.

Motor vehicles to be registered in Denmark

The following vehicles must be registered in Denmark:

  • Cars, motorcycles, trucks and vans
  • Registration must be done if the user is resident in Denmark, which means that the user is either working in Denmark and over again, here or having resided in either 1 year or 185 days within 12 months
  • REMEMBER: The vehicle must be registered within 2 weeks from arrival date

Following exceptions applies vehicle registration in Denmark although you residing in countryside:

  • If you work for a company that is registered in another EU country
  • If the vehicle is to be demonstrated for Danish buyers, dealers or journalists
  • If the vehicle has to go through Denmark to get to like Sweden or Germany
  • If you maintain your residence abroad because of this affiliation
  • If your actual vehicle broken outside Denmark

ATTENTION! The first four points require a permit from the tax.
